The SNAP program is run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and tailored by Texas Health and Human Services to meet the needs of Texas residents.

Eligible beneficiaries receive their SNAP benefits every month on a Lone Star Card, which functions much like a debit or credit card.

With the Lone Star Card, beneficiaries can buy essential food items such as meats, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. However, purchasing hot food, tobacco, alcohol, or using the card to pay for services or bills is not allowed.

Eligibility for SNAP benefits can vary, but generally, low-income families, as well as unemployed individuals, can apply.

There are specific guidelines for people between the ages of 18 and 52, including work-related conditions, although exceptions are made for pregnant women and individuals with disabilities.

Regarding benefit amounts, a single-person household can receive a maximum of $2,005 per month. A household with five members can get as much as $4,832, with additional provisions made for larger families to avoid program misuse.
